I'd like to say I accomplished a lot of quilting during this past year but alas.... I have not. Our life was focused on my dear dad whose health was declining day by day and so naturally he and my mom were our priority. We were blessed to have him in our lives as long as we did. Very sadly he passed away last December, here at home, with us at his side, at the age of 91. So since that sad day we been all about catching up and helping my Mom. Happily she is doing well and life is starting to look a little more like "normal" again. Whatever normal is. I am actively working on preparations for posting some new YouTube videos for you. Hopefully that will happen in the next month or two. </p><p>Here is a link to my channel <span><a class="x-el x-el-a c1-16 c1-17 c1-7n c1-19 c1-10 c1-1a c1-1b c1-7z c1-b c1-1i c1-1j c1-1k c1-1l" href="https://youtu.be/UeQJ6oGR-Awor" target="_blank">https://youtu.be/UeQJ6oGR-Awor</a></span></p><p> I hope you are enjoying playing with fabric. Oh my! Yes, besides updating the tutorials here on my blog, it has been way too long since I've posted. I am ashamed to say that it took a horrid pandemic to spur me on.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
That said, I am going to forgive myself for not doing it sooner.<br />
<br />
You are most likely one of thousands upon thousands of people that are hunkered down at home. Sadly, perhaps you are out of work. Maybe you are working from home, and you may have children home from school too. Whatever your circumstance you may find yourself getting things done, or doing things you used to do a long time ago. You might be cooking more than you did, or taking more walks, playing games with your family, calling old friends, volunteering, maybe even sending notes via snail mail, and of course picking up that quilt project that you started some time ago. I just happen to have a few of those around. Hahahaha. Whatever it is, you may be saying "why haven't I fit this into my life before?"<br />
Well, we are a busy and active society.<br />
It's all too easy to set aside some of the small and simple pleasures of a silly game, a call to friends, a family meal together, the appreciation of fresh air.<br />
But, right now we are all on hold. We don't know for how long, and that's disconcerting, but when life begins returning to the way it was maybe we should try to keep some of those forgotten little pleasures in our lives. So forgive yourselves too when you find yourselves saying "why didn't I do this sooner?". So, while we are all in limbo......dig through your quilt projects that are patiently waiting for you and take pleasure in your craft.<br />
Stay well and be kind. Share your toilet paper 😂 We're all in this together. <br />

Spring has arrived and I’m coming out of hibernation.<br />
You’d think that I would have had plenty of time to blog throughout the winter but it just didn’t happen. I guess I’ve been busier than I thought keeping my parents healthy and entertained through the dreary winter months. When it comes down to it, that of course, is most important and a more precious use of my time.<br />
After 3 years of residing back here in Wisconsin, and learning to embrace winter, I’m happy to see winter losing its grip. Spring is here at last, at least according to the calendar.<br />
Just when I finally mastered tying my winter boots with winter gloves on! Not easy, LOL<br />
My hubby and I are doing very well at snow removal. You get pretty good at it when your driveway is 300 feet long. <br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I am getting ready to finish up several quilts that I tinkered with over the winter. I must say, quilts for warmth and cuddling in are much more in need up here in Wisconsin than they were in south Florida. In Florida, quilts tend to be more of an artistic decorative nature. No matter what their purpose, I love them all. My little snowman looks like he could have used a quilt.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1g9ZZDzANpU/Wq8joSfauiI/AAAAAAAAKio/0D4iU_crcrAgqI9IlSAvFEWj-DCsMxNCwCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_7324.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1g9ZZDzANpU/Wq8joSfauiI/AAAAAAAAKio/0D4iU_crcrAgqI9IlSAvFEWj-DCsMxNCwCLcBGAs/s640/IMG_7324.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I'd like to say that I finished all sorts of new quilt patterns this winter, I said I’d like to say it, but I can’t. Oh me, oh my.<br />
I did finish a cute new pin cushion pattern that incorporates string piecing and some simple hand embroidery. It's called “Strings and Stitches” and you can order it on my <a href="https://thistledownquilts.com/" target="_blank">website</a> or my <a href="https://etsy.com/shop/planetpollyanna" target="_blank">Etsy</a> shop.<br />
I used the Project Red fabrics by Sweetwater for Moda. I paired them with a natural linen for the front and back.<br />
I do have several kits available on my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/589318438/pin-cushion-kit-for-strings-and-stitches?ref=shop_home_active_1" target="_blank">Etsy</a> shop, so hurry on by and scoop one up. <br />

I got the baking bug today and wanted to share this super easy cookie recipe that is yummy, easy and pretty. It' a great recipe when the baking bug hits you but you don't have a bunch of baking ingredients on hand. The refrigerated pie crusts are easy to keep on hand. You can whip these out in a jiffy for those last minute impromptu gatherings.<br />

<br />
Jelly Tarts<br />
1 package of pie crust ( the kind in the refrigerator section, it's pre rolled in the package.<br />
1 small jar of seedless strawberry jam or other preferred flavor. Apricot and current are also great choices.<br />
<br />
Powdered sugar<br />
Parchment paper for baking/ cooking<br />
Round cookie cutter about 3-4"<br />
<br />
Preheat oven to 350 degrees<br />
Line cookie sheet with baking parchment paper.<br />
Unroll pie dough on a lightly floured surface.<br />
Cut out shapes from dough with the cookie cutter. Gather up the remnants of the dough and roll out again and cut more shapes.<br />
On half of the cookie cut outs, cut a circle out of the middle.<br />
Place all of the cookie shapes on the parchment lined cookie sheet and bake about 12-13 minutes or until barely golden.<br />
Remove from oven and spread the jam on the solid cookies. Top with the cut out cookies. Sprinkle with powdered sugar.<br />
<br />
Serve with a nice cup of tea, coffee or cocoa. Mmmmmmm! <br />

I am lucky enough to moonlight,very part time, at a really fun quilt shop, My Material Matters. The other day a customer came in with questions on how to repair and wash a quilt that they found in her families home.<br />
When she took it out of the bag and laid it out on the table, I was in for a real treat.<br />
It was a gorgeous antique redwork quilt.<br />
I enjoy handwork, and love to see antique quilts, and I was enthralled with it.<br />
<br />
It was in beautiful condition with the exception of some wear on the binding at the top of the quilt and a couple of tiny stains.<br />
As we spread the quilt out more, I saw the date stitched into it......omg 1896! It's a wonder that is in such wonderful condition. <br />
<br />

Not only that, but the stitching was wonderful, and the motifs and phrases were so unique and charming. What a treasure they had. She wasn't sure where it came from. It had a name on it (Edna) but she didn't know who Edna was. My mom's name is Edna, but she wouldn't give it to me....HAHAHAHA. No really.<br />
<br />
<br />
She had no knowledge of quilts and so I filled her in to the best of my knowledge. I then happily referred her to the <a href="http://www.wiquiltmuseum.com/" target="_blank">Wisconsin Museum of Quilts and Fiber Arts </a>in Cedarburg WI for further information and guidance. <br />

In the process I've decided to place my tutorials over here on my blog.<br />
Please bear with me. I am trying my best to get them all over here quickly.<br />
<br />
The first one is a tutorial on how to String piece a quilt block.<br />
<br />
<b><i> First... what is a string quilt?</i></b> A quilt made from kite string? Butchers string? NO, not from literal strings.....<br />
In the case of quilts, the term string, actually refers to strips of fabric. The fabric strips can be of almost any width. Usually 2-1/2" or less, all the way down to 1/2" if you dare.<br />
The strips or "strings" are stitched side by side to a base foundation for the purpose of stabilizing any bias edges (especially if using scraps) and to keep the strings straight (not curving) and on course. In many cases, as in the tutorial below, the strings are stitched diagonally across the quilt block.<br />
String quilts are a fabulous way to use up your stash for a scrappy look. you can also be more precise about color choices and placement for a more graphic and dramatic quilt.<br />
<br />
Below is my tutorial for making a string quilt block using Whisperlite as the foundation instead of muslin or paper. You'll love it.<br />
Enjoy stitching. <br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="color: #cc0000;"><i><b>How to string piece a quilt block using Whisperlite tracer/foundation</b></i></span></span><br />
String piecing is a great way to utilize your fabric scraps, use up some of your precious fabric stash, or, you can always go shopping at your favorite quilt shop for more.<br />
<br />
String piecing on a foundation will stabilize your work along with any bias edges. Traditionally, muslin was used as a foundation, but muslin adds a lot of extra weight to your finished quilt. Sometimes paper foundations are used but then, when you are done stitching, you have to tear away all the paper. Groan.....<br />
That is very messy, and time consuming. Don't know about you, but I'd rather spend my time stitching than tearing.<br />
By using Whisperlite as the foundation, there is no need to remove it when you are done sewing, and it is super lightweight. You can barely tell it is there. <br />
<br />
You can "string piece" free form (without any drawn lines) or, if you like, you can draw the position and width of the strings directly on the whisperlite foundation. In this example I am showing a string pieced quilt block with the stitching lines drawn on the Whisperlite tracer foundation, and placed diagonally on the block foundation.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Step 1</b>. Cut the Whisperlite foundation to the size of the block you want. Make sure to add your 1/4" seam allowance to all sides. Draw the stitching lines for the "strings" of your block with a regular pencil. The closer together the lines are, the smaller your strings will be. That means you can use narrower strips, but it also means more stitching. The strings can be of varying widths, and can be lined up evenly, or skewed like this example. It's up to you or the pattern you are using.<br />
<br />
<b>Step 2.</b> Cut your fabric into 'strings" (strips) allowing extra width for seam allowances and placement. I cut most of mine 1-1/2" to 2-1/2" but again it's depends on your design. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Place two of the strings right sides together, and place them under the Whisperlite with at least 1/4" extending past the line you are going to stitch on. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You can start in the center as I did here, or, start from one corner and travel across the block. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Pin the strings in place. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Step 3.</b> Stitch your first strings on the drawn stitching line, with the Whisperlite on the top, through all layers. I used a dark thread so you can see it better. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I've fallen off my creative groove. I guess it's only normal for that to happen now and then. Maybe it's winter.......<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3ImIVRfSeXM/WKqDhO4on-I/AAAAAAAAI0Q/ZKX9nHojrccEhEtEA4OfIo05m65eOA26ACKgB/s1600/IMG_4581.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3ImIVRfSeXM/WKqDhO4on-I/AAAAAAAAI0Q/ZKX9nHojrccEhEtEA4OfIo05m65eOA26ACKgB/s400/IMG_4581.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
maybe it's this darn cold I have......anyway, I'm not going to dwell on it. Instead, I've decided to dive into a project.<br />
Not that I don't have a few in the works LOL don't we all? This bout of doldrums calls for starting something new.<br />
I was pondering a small wool hexi quilt. Hmmmmm, I went into my stash and dug out some pretty pastel colors to help chase away the gray of winter.....<br />
I gave them a quick wash and dry so they'd be ready in the morning.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-71UuL-uzijM/WKp_7bVeLVI/AAAAAAAAIz0/zdafEZHIkRQOvb5SU0SXDOzq4U2LwRGwACKgB/s1600/IMG_4526.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="516" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-71UuL-uzijM/WKp_7bVeLVI/AAAAAAAAIz0/zdafEZHIkRQOvb5SU0SXDOzq4U2LwRGwACKgB/s640/IMG_4526.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
First I had to get breakfast out of the way so my empty tummy wouldn't interrupt me.<br />
Then I figured I'd fire up the printer to print out a small hexi to make a template. (I really need to get a hex n' more ruler) anyway, I guess I was on the right track to start with breakfast.<br />
As happenstance would have it......I grabbed the cereal box, and there, right in my hand, was the hexi I was looking for. You just never know where you'll find inspiration, or tools!<br />
After I finished breakfast, I quickly set to cutting out my hexi's and headed to the studio to play.<br />

It's sweet corn season in Wisconsin and we are making frequent trips to our favorite farm so we can enjoy it while we can. It is absolutely heavenly!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bdOSaTLVA5E/V7S0jzQGViI/AAAAAAAABww/9_Z53XweRfkrlDYQcI-wG7a6CHBZdTbPQCLcB/s1600/sweetcorn.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bdOSaTLVA5E/V7S0jzQGViI/AAAAAAAABww/9_Z53XweRfkrlDYQcI-wG7a6CHBZdTbPQCLcB/s640/sweetcorn.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
They also had a fun variety of colorful cauliflower...I didn't know it was available in purple now.<br />
How fun!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2Pfe1g_sBOk/V7S1Mwb6sGI/AAAAAAAABw0/LAL8AqKaOgUmVkxv0OYcQ19W1PA69NtuACLcB/s1600/califlower.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2Pfe1g_sBOk/V7S1Mwb6sGI/AAAAAAAABw0/LAL8AqKaOgUmVkxv0OYcQ19W1PA69NtuACLcB/s640/califlower.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
and then there are the luscious tomatoes on sale.....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

My sister-in-law, Lisa, shared some of her summer squash with us and we found a great recipe for a cold summer salad.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QKcGzJ9zu9w/V7S36BJJc_I/AAAAAAAABxI/yPrPXscYk3Awg-HPkMHmWydXMYlgSH0SQCLcB/s1600/squashsalad.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QKcGzJ9zu9w/V7S36BJJc_I/AAAAAAAABxI/yPrPXscYk3Awg-HPkMHmWydXMYlgSH0SQCLcB/s640/squashsalad.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's the recipe:<br />
<br />
2 cups julienned zucchini<br />
2 cups julienned yellow summer squash<br />
1 cups thinly sliced radishes<br />
1/2 cup vegetable oil<br />
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar<br />
1 Tablespoon Dijon mustard<br />
1 Tablespoon chopped fresh parsley<br />
3/4 tsp. dill weed<br />
3/4 tsp. slat<br />
1/4 tsp. pepper<br />
<br />
Yield 6-8 servings<br />
In a large bowl toss together the veggies. Combine the rest of the ingredients in a jar with a tight fitting lid, and shake well. Pour over veggies and toss to coat. Cover and put in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours.<br />
I found this in the Aug/Sept. issue of "Our Wisconsin" magazine. It's tasty and refreshing. <br />
<br />
I actually found some remnants of one of my favorite veggie fabrics in my stash and used it up to make some veggie hot pads for the kitchen. I should have purchased more of this fabric.....drat.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I hope you are enjoying the waning days of summer. Soon, a new season will be stepping in.<br />
After living in Florida for 40 years, we are enjoying the change of seasons. Even if it means one of them contains snow.<br />
Though Florida has seasons, they are less distinct. One of the Florida seasons involves lots of tourists, and the other consists of lots of rain, heat and storms.<br />
<br />
I am loving the multitude of wildflowers that grace the Wisconsin countryside and all the beautiful annuals and perennials in the garden.<br />
The black-eyed Susan's are bursting in blossom right now. So pretty.<br />
Try to take some time to go out and enjoy the end of summer and all it's delights. <br />
Plan your stitching projects for nighttime, and the cold that will be settling in eventually.<br />

<span style="font-size: small;">It uses a new technique I developed for projects using woolfelt and felted wool.</span><br />
<h4>
<span style="font-size: small;">I call it a making a "Wool Smoothie" The (almost) free pattern is a modern table runner pattern and you can find the link for the download below.</span></h4>
<span style="font-size: small;">If you work with woolfelt or felted wool, you know that the seams can be quite bulky due to the thickness of the material. While that is not always an issue, it can be at times. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Now there is a fun and easy way around that. </span><br />
<h4>
<span style="font-size: small;">By using my Whisperlite tracer/foundation as an ultra lightweight base you can "seam" the wool without the bulk. Whisperlite is NOT a fusible product. Ask your local quilt shop if they have it. If not, you can order it with <a href="https://www.thistledownquilts.com/shop?olsPage=products/whisperlite-tracerfoundation" target="_blank">this link</a>, or<a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/263163262/whisperlite-tracer-foundation-material?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=whisperlite&ref=sr_gallery_1" target="_blank"> this link.</a> It's 42" wide and is sold by the yard. You'll love it.</span></h4>

</h3>
<h4>
Here are the basics of the Wool Smoothie™ technique.</h4>
Cut a piece of Whisperlite 1" larger than the finished project size.<br />
With a #2 pencil, draw a line 1/2" from the edge on all four sides.<br />
<br />
Tape
the Whisperlite to a flat work surface. * A cutting mat, or cardboard
is great. If using a table with a finished surface protect it with
cardboard first. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zFoaG4dVmEU/V5gcefSUZFI/AAAAAAAABv0/wiPACLP7sqY_uHvEQHoCOVf5wAGYg9R-gCLcB/s1600/33tapeinplacewhisperlite%2Bcopy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="529" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zFoaG4dVmEU/V5gcefSUZFI/AAAAAAAABv0/wiPACLP7sqY_uHvEQHoCOVf5wAGYg9R-gCLcB/s640/33tapeinplacewhisperlite%2Bcopy.jpg" title="Whisperlite instructions for table runner pattern" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Cut the wool pieces as called for in the pattern. <br />
Using quilter's basting spray (DO NOT use spray adhesive) and working in a well ventilated area with newspaper protecting your work surface, spray one side of the wool piece.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dlUb1w6M2Us/V5gfOfxogLI/AAAAAAAABv8/xar8zvRbeW0iz7Jw7qtSf2ZAh0evO7REACEw/s1600/34spraybastewool.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="476" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dlUb1w6M2Us/V5gfOfxogLI/AAAAAAAABv8/xar8zvRbeW0iz7Jw7qtSf2ZAh0evO7REACEw/s640/34spraybastewool.jpg" title="Whisperlite Wool Smoothie™ by Thistledown and company" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Place the spray basted wool pieces onto the Whisperlite foundation as directed in the pattern instructions. Hand press in place. Add several pieces at a time and make sure they are tight up against each other with no spacing inbetween. Make sure you have it lined up properly.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OWoXwylU6hc/V5gjDeTllCI/AAAAAAAABwQ/zdgDiwVgiO0Xf_izzafNa09wz0xz9auCQCEw/s1600/woolsmoothiespray.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="478" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OWoXwylU6hc/V5gjDeTllCI/AAAAAAAABwQ/zdgDiwVgiO0Xf_izzafNa09wz0xz9auCQCEw/s640/woolsmoothiespray.jpg" title="Wool Smoothie™ with Whisperlite foundation" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
After applying about 1/3 of the pieces allow to dry about 10-15 minutes.<br />
Now either by hand, or machine, stitch along the seams with decorative stitches, such as a fly stitch, a ladder stitch, or any bridging stitch that jumps back and forth between the two pieces. If you are stitching by hand the whisperlite is super easy to stitch through. Of course it's no problem by machine either. The Whisperlite stabilizes the seamless seams without adding bulk or stiffness. How great is that! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6wZI128NSJE/V5giomp4eAI/AAAAAAAABwM/VZ3rpTJPUfQSRnRpeF0pqX57BaPaKpQeACLcB/s1600/woolsmoothiecloseup2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="478" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6wZI128NSJE/V5giomp4eAI/AAAAAAAABwM/VZ3rpTJPUfQSRnRpeF0pqX57BaPaKpQeACLcB/s640/woolsmoothiecloseup2.jpg" title="Wool Smoothie@ with Whisperlite tracer/foundation by Thistledown and company" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Continue adding pieces and stitching them in place. TA-DA.... Now you have a nice flat, smooth woolfelt table runner, or placemat, or candle mat, etc. because you don't have lumpy, bumpy seams.<br />
<br />
<br />
The Wool Smoothie™ technique is also great for crazy quilting, and for making miniature wool quilts too.<br />
In fact, I'll be sharing more free projects using this technique soon.<br />
I hope you have fun making your Wool Smoothie™ modern table runner.<br />
<br />
Stitch on....stay happy<br />

Last post I promised to show you a new technique, and I will share it with you very soon. I will also share a free project.<br />
<br />
First, I thought it might be best to explain some basics about the difference between felted wool, wool felt, and Woolfelt®. They are all very popular for making stitched projects such as mug rugs, penny rugs, table runners and all manner of cute pincushions, dolls, and adorable stuffed toys, etc.<br />
<br />
Of course it all begins with these fuzzy sheep.....that's where wool comes from. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MmrjVZ3d4iU/V3dKdw2-q8I/AAAAAAAABvU/5s4VYLcTTxoeoCZEjW8m_C_9fvz6ySmkQCKgB/s1600/30gotwool.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Thistledownquilts.com" border="0" height="480" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MmrjVZ3d4iU/V3dKdw2-q8I/AAAAAAAABvU/5s4VYLcTTxoeoCZEjW8m_C_9fvz6ySmkQCKgB/s640/30gotwool.jpg" title="Thistledown and company blog" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
So, what's the difference between felted wool and woolfelt?<br />
<br />
Felted wool is created by taking a wool fabric item such as wool yardage, a wool blanket, a wool suit, or wool skirt, and transforming it, by "felting" it. The felting process makes the wool dense, similar to felt.<br />
The wool to be felted, must be at least 80% wool, and should not be worsted wool. Worsted wool is designed not to felt.<br />
Once the wool is "felted" the fabric will not fray hardly at all along the edges. You may get a thread end that peeks out here and there, but only a tiny bit. It does vary with how well it was felted, and the quality of wool used. Here, you can still slightly see the weave of the fabric of these felted wool samples.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UvdQmkCnrBU/V3c7lGm0cgI/AAAAAAAABus/_X9_wGPFwdUlU7btQRRMAA3DBMIn3xYYACLcB/s1600/feltedwoolsamples.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="465" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UvdQmkCnrBU/V3c7lGm0cgI/AAAAAAAABus/_X9_wGPFwdUlU7btQRRMAA3DBMIn3xYYACLcB/s640/feltedwoolsamples.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: small;">Felted wool samples</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Using felted wool allows you to create raw edge appliqués. The appliques are finished with embroidery stitches such as the blanket stitch, stem stitch, feather stitch etc. The applique sample below is finished with blanket stitches.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-welZ6smX6Bg/V3dBC4SJQdI/AAAAAAAABvE/HSnUk7XinQ0LG-FEyc7v4dc_Agnr5Dz8wCLcB/s1600/39woolappliquecloseup.tiff" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="wool applique by Thistledown and Company" border="0" height="478" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-welZ6smX6Bg/V3dBC4SJQdI/AAAAAAAABvE/HSnUk7XinQ0LG-FEyc7v4dc_Agnr5Dz8wCLcB/s640/39woolappliquecloseup.tiff" title="Wool applique Thistledown blog" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: small;">felted wool applique</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
There are many fine purveyors of felted wool, so you don't have to do the felting process yourself.<br />
Personally, I would rather shop for felted wool, than felt it myself.<br />
Here are a few sites to help get your collection started !<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.birdbraindesigns.net/" target="_blank">Bird Brain Designs</a><br />
<a href="http://www.woolery.com/" target="_blank">The Woolery</a><br />
<a href="http://www.moondancecolor.com/" target="_blank">Moondance Color</a><br />
<a href="http://www.weeksdyeworks.com/" target="_blank">Week's Dye Works</a><br />
<br />
Now, what about Woolfelt® or, wool felt?<br />
Felt, regardless of fiber content, is made by pressing fibers together using a combination of pressure, moisture and heat to create a bonded felt textile. It is a not a woven fabric like felted wool is.<br />
<br />
Woolfelt® is a brand of felt made by <a href="http://www.nationalnonwovens.com/products.htm" target="_blank">National Nonwovens</a>. They make a large variety of dreamy felt with several options of fiber content. They offer 100% Woolfelt, along with blended felts containing wool, rayon, and even bamboo.<br />
<i><span style="font-size: large;">*Note.....</span></i><br />
Full disclosure......I am a pattern partner of National Nonwovens and receive product samples from them to design with. That said, I do love their products. They have a large range of luscious colors and I love the consistent quality of their Woolfelt®. It's a real delight to work with with.<br />
<br />
Wool felt (not the brand) is any felt made with wool content.<br />
<br />
Here is a closeup of Woolfelt®, you can see there is no woven characteristic to the felt and there are no stray threads along the raw edges seen at the right side of this picture below.<br />
You can achieve a felted wool "puffy" appearance with Woolfelt® by washing it in hot water and drying it in a hot dryer. It will shrink and get a more dimensional (puffy) texture. You can also just use it as is, for a smoother, flat, felt texture. <br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-euJVsWd_PKc/V3c9aZ56_AI/AAAAAAAABu4/4yOvR8RCWeMS7EAr9ifb4R34NSsD9NdPACLcB/s1600/woolfeltcloseup.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-euJVsWd_PKc/V3c9aZ56_AI/AAAAAAAABu4/4yOvR8RCWeMS7EAr9ifb4R34NSsD9NdPACLcB/s640/woolfeltcloseup.jpg" width="620" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: small;">Woolfelt® sample</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I enjoy working with both Woolfelt®, and felted wool. The texture is wonderful, the colors are divine, and it showcases hand embroidery stitches and decorative machine stitching, beautifully.<br />

If you haven't made a project using wool, give it a try. It's very enjoyable to work with.<br />
I have several patterns available that use wool. Jump over to my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/Planetpollyanna/items" target="_blank">Etsy site</a> and take a peek.<br />

I think I'd rather deal with that than what Jeff is going through. He had hand surgery the day after we finished the tile. Now he's in recuperation mode.<br />

<br />
There is a barn quilt trail map for Wisconsin, though I doubt we'll see them all, there are so many wonderful ones we have seen so far. My hubby is now trained to pull over for barn quilts, along with quilt shops of course. <br />
<br />
<br />
We did fabulous at our booth at the Winter Quilt Show, everyone loved my demo's for using my Whisperlite tracer/foundation. <br />
On that note, I will be sharing a new technique with you next week. I call it Wool Smoothies.<br />
By using Whisperlite with woolfelt or felted wool you can create pieced wool projects without the lumps and bumps.<br />
But right now I have to go make supper for everyone.<br />
Apricot chicken is on tap for tonight.....yummm. <br />

Save the date February 27th and take in the <a href="http://www.winterquiltshow.com/" target="_blank">Winter Quilt Show</a> .<br />
<br />
It's been a while since I have set up as a vendor at a quilt show. In fact I think the last one was Quilt Market in Houston some years back.<br />
My BFF Karen usually came along to shows as my helper, and I'll miss having her here at this show.<br />
We always had so much fun, and even though it's a lot of work, it's worth it.<br />
I'll be doing a lecture/ demo about my Whisperlite material and all of its uses, including some great stash busting string quilt ideas.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My friend Jessie's string quilt</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
My dear sister-in- law, Lisa has kindly agreed to be my helper this year, along with my dear husband.<br />
I'm excited to be participating, and getting to know more quilters here in Wisconsin after being away so long.<br />
So, show up if you can, on Saturday the 27th, and immerse yourself in all things quilty. I'm sure there will be lots and lots of lovely quilts to see, and plenty of great vendors to shop.<br />
I know I am always creatively invigorated after a good quilt show. Hope to see you there, or if you're not in the area, I hope there is a quilt show somewhere near to you, for you to enjoy.<br />
Get inspired and quilt!<br />

I made this hand embroidered table runner sometime in the '80's. <br />
Wow, I had all but forgotten that I made this piece for my mom.<br />
She pulled it out the linen closet this Thanksgiving to put on the credenza in the dining room.<br />
I was very touched she still had it, let alone, liked it enough to keep it. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uECu_xBum2c/VsUrJ4Yx4CI/AAAAAAAABtM/5iGZmAkJnmw/s1600/tbtembroidery2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Thistledown and Company" border="0" height="235" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uECu_xBum2c/VsUrJ4Yx4CI/AAAAAAAABtM/5iGZmAkJnmw/s400/tbtembroidery2.jpg" title="hand embroidery thistledownblog" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I obviously had some time on my hands. I designed the piece, and I should have counted the number of French knots. see green rings) What was I thinking? I was disappointed that it got so wrinkly in the center, of course, I've gotten more wrinkly too. LOL<br />
I must have hooped it wrong. Oh well, I'm not about to do it over.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6NPxcvfqFsY/VsUroEkK1rI/AAAAAAAABtQ/epyEld-V3wg/s1600/tbtembroidery3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="hand embroidery Thistledown and company" border="0" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6NPxcvfqFsY/VsUroEkK1rI/AAAAAAAABtQ/epyEld-V3wg/s400/tbtembroidery3.jpg" title="hand embroidery thistledownblog" width="355" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: small;">French Knot frenzy</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
I must say though, that I got pretty good at French knots by the time I was done.<br />
<br />
I've always enjoyed hand embroidery, and besides this piece I have done pillowcases, redwork quilts,<br />
Crazy quilts, and of course stitching on felted wool and woolfelt in many forms.<br />
Below is my Berry Cherry pattern.....more French knots!<br />
<br />
I really enjoy blanket stitching by hand too, but it is also nice that a lot of sewing machines have blanket stitching as a choice. I know not everyone enjoys hand stitching.<br />
Question......Do you enjoy doing hand embroidery? Have you checked out <a href="http://www.suespargo.com/" target="_blank">Sue Spargo's</a> work? It is wonderful. I love her designs and the great variety of stitches she uses.<br />
Did you just start doing hand embroidery, or, have you been hand embroidering for a long time?<br />
What's your favorite stitch?<br />
<br />
May your threads stay untangled,<br />

<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-20Dhn8tBTss/Vr_rzPgXr_I/AAAAAAAABs4/xcvGLXS0WRs/s1600/threadspool.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="" border="0" height="254" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-20Dhn8tBTss/Vr_rzPgXr_I/AAAAAAAABs4/xcvGLXS0WRs/s320/threadspool.jpg" title="thistledownand company blog" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: small;">my spool of thread</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
You figure it can't have gone very far. You look around, but it's not within view. Now you end up having to follow the trail of thread, to find out where in the world that spool ended up. If you have a wood or tile floor, it can travel pretty far. If it's a new spool and has momentum who knows where it may end up.<br />
<div>
Well, that's been my life this past year or so.....chasing that new spool of thread and its led us miles away, back to my hometown.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: small;">the moving truck</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
</div>
<div>
Yes, big changes for my hubby and me. Long story short, We have lived in S. Florida for the past 40 years and then made the decision to sell our home, pack up, and head back to be near our families in the great frozen tundra a.k.a. The state of Wisconsin. Say What! yes, everyone is telling us we're doing it backwards. we are supposed to be going to Florida not leaving it.<br />
Well, somethings are more important than weather........ Like family. That's why we made the big move.</div>
<div>
Anyway.....needless to say I didn't have the time, nor the energy to blog while getting our house ready to go on the market, then the packing......no I didn't have much fabric to pack HA - HA - HA</div>
<div>
That's when your hubby realizes just how much fabric you have.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: small;">no....this isn't all fabric.....my fabric went in special bins!</span></td></tr>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
My local guild benefited from my de-stashing, which put a small dent in my stash. </div>
<div>
On the flip side, he has quite the tool stash.<br />
</div>
<div>
It is wonderful being near our families again, and even though we sorely miss our many dear friends in Florida, (weepy eyes) we know we made the right decision to move back to be with parents, siblings, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles etc. and friends from years past. (happy dance)<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: small;">Great niece's 1st birthday cake experience.</span></td></tr>

</div>
<div>
My husbands dear sweet sister was quite ill, and we were able to be here for her, and spend a precious 7 months with her before she passed away just before Christmas. Those precious months with her are ones we'll never regret having. </div>
<div>
My loving parents are now getting up in years, and we also want to be here for them, as they need more help in their daily lives. We also have a lot of catching up to do.<br />
Family is the thread that weaves our lives together, and following my new spool of thread led us back to them. From my sewing room floor in Florida, uphill, 1500 miles to Wisconsin.<br />
Can you say BRRRRRRR?<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: small;">afternoon drive in Wisconsin</span></td></tr>

I'm glad we followed the thread, now time to get stitching, after all, it looks like tomorrow is going to be a snow day.</div>

See you back here soon with more quilt and life adventures.</div>

Anyway, the shop I work at also does sewing machine service and repair and I have seen a lot of incredible mishaps when it comes to sewing machines.<br />
I will share these tidbits of insight with you to help prevent these little disasters from happening to you.<br />
This one I was amazed at, I had never even thought this could happen, read on for the<br />
cautionary tail.......<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Does your machine have 2 spool pins? You know, a vertical one, and a horizontal one. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">When you have your machine threaded up using the horizontal spool pin, do you sometimes "park" a spare spool of thread on the vertical spool pin? </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Like this....</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-r14aySGHy9Y/VM2heqxFaYI/AAAAAAAABoY/gemCGyqDUGE/s1600/thread%2Btail%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-r14aySGHy9Y/VM2heqxFaYI/AAAAAAAABoY/gemCGyqDUGE/s1600/thread%2Btail%2B1.jpg" height="584" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oCFrbD5-PbA/VM2hh3LEbCI/AAAAAAAABog/ZoNScBXTvp4/s1600/thread%2Btail%2Bcloseup.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oCFrbD5-PbA/VM2hh3LEbCI/AAAAAAAABog/ZoNScBXTvp4/s1600/thread%2Btail%2Bcloseup.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Well, I know I won't be doing that anymore and here's why.......</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-p9QdpRG8pT0/VM2jM7ajUDI/AAAAAAAABos/H_NJivvmIV8/s1600/thread%2Bmess.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="all wound up" border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-p9QdpRG8pT0/VM2jM7ajUDI/AAAAAAAABos/H_NJivvmIV8/s1600/thread%2Bmess.jpg" height="400" title="a cautionary tail by thistledown & Co" width="323" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Yikes!</b> This came out of one woman's sewing machine. (No, it wasn't mine) The tail of thread that is loose and hanging down can get sucked up in the machine (via the hand wheel area) and gets all wound up inside on the main drive shaft thingy. Of course the machine stops working eventually, and that's why she brought it in for service. You can see that it happened with more than one spool because there are abut 4 colors of thread that got all wound up inside. Her machine was much happier once this was removed!</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ueyr6YGpbSk/VM2jQu2OaRI/AAAAAAAABo0/8pUW1CCrBEs/s1600/thread%2Bmess%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="all wound up 2" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ueyr6YGpbSk/VM2jQu2OaRI/AAAAAAAABo0/8pUW1CCrBEs/s1600/thread%2Bmess%2B2.jpg" height="400" title="a cautionary tail by thistledown & Co" width="343" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">What's even more amazing is, this was the second machine within a month that
came in with this issue. The other one only had one color, but a whole
bunch of it.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">So.....think twice about "parking" your spare spools on your spare spool pin. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Happy sewing! </span>Linda/Thistledown and Co.http://www.blogger.com/profile/00707752178000695549noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7014956893139819945.post-76528926349704690642014-07-21T12:08:00.002-05:002014-07-21T12:08:35.790-05:00say it with color Which color speaks to you? Red, aqua, purple, brown, orange, pink, blue, yellow, green, etc. etc. etc.?<br />
<br />
Do you have a "go-to" color?<br />
<br />
You know, the color that your closet or fabric stash has an abundance of. I find that I have more aqua blue, red and spring green in my closets and stash. <br />
<br />
Do you tend to make quilts in the colors you usually wear?<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RCHCoaydfvw/U81DHBxrSDI/AAAAAAAABmw/VZAsJ8aA6y8/s1600/brandon+mably+waves.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RCHCoaydfvw/U81DHBxrSDI/AAAAAAAABmw/VZAsJ8aA6y8/s1600/brandon+mably+waves.jpg" height="254" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Brandon Mably - waves</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
Do you get brave with color choices when you are making a quilt or bag? For instance you may favor blue for your home or wardrobe but you choose bright pinks or yellows for your projects.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aBNJG6alSRk/U81DYQwZKHI/AAAAAAAABnA/vGkOMZuRP3A/s1600/kaffe+fassett+jungle+paisley.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aBNJG6alSRk/U81DYQwZKHI/AAAAAAAABnA/vGkOMZuRP3A/s1600/kaffe+fassett+jungle+paisley.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Kaffe Fassett - jungle paisley</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<br />
Ever notice that your mood can affect your color choice when you get dressed in the morning or when shopping for new fabric or clothes? One morning, this may be your color pick ......<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TAyetyOymLU/U81GT_nYaXI/AAAAAAAABn0/sdn35e4y81o/s1600/AmyButlergraylacework.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TAyetyOymLU/U81GT_nYaXI/AAAAAAAABn0/sdn35e4y81o/s1600/AmyButlergraylacework.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Amy Butler - Gray Lacework</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
and the next day it may be this.......<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8mefyd_poaI/U81FoNTJNDI/AAAAAAAABns/DLkxP1qkKN0/s1600/AmyButlerTumbleroses.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8mefyd_poaI/U81FoNTJNDI/AAAAAAAABns/DLkxP1qkKN0/s1600/AmyButlerTumbleroses.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Amy Butler - Tumble Roses</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Are you easily influenced by trending colors, or have you stayed with your tried and true color choices?<br />
<br />
I love color, all colors, and I love the current trend of the use of lots of color and the mix up of colors that weren't considered "right" in days gone by.<br />
Just take a look at the fabrics by Kaffe Fasset's, Brandon Mably, Amy Butler, and other popular designers, and how color is used in their collections. When you look at you fabric stash, think how drab our world would be without color and without changing the way we see it. <br />

Much of my pattern design is a long multi-step process, as are the memory quilts I make for clients.<br />
A lot of thought and stitching goes into them and it takes attention, concentration and commitment.<br />
So, as a treat I really enjoy those quick, but darling, little projects that are done and done in a jiffy and don't create a large quiltnado in the process.<br />
<br />
This is a little Christmas table runner I made for my Sister-in-law, don't worry she's already seen it. I've already gifted it to her so she can put it out ahead of Christmas. It is the "ten minute table runner" that has been around for quite some time, but it is so fun to make.<span style="mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;"><span style="font-family: Arial;"> See the link below for PDF instructions if you need a quickie......</span></span><br />

First there was Sharknado, and if that wasn't scary enough, now there's this ....</h3>
<h3>
beware, this perilous phenomenon could be headed your way! </h3>
<h3>
It can strike without much warning and leave behind a massive trail of debris. </h3>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Or7ZO0hQzT4/UgKSqSb2M4I/AAAAAAAABlg/79yHdv9SDA4/s1600/quiltnadobylindazokan.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Or7ZO0hQzT4/UgKSqSb2M4I/AAAAAAAABlg/79yHdv9SDA4/s640/quiltnadobylindazokan.jpg" width="476" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><h2>
<span style="color: #cc0000;"> <span style="color: #3d85c6;">my recent category 2 <a href="http://www.thistledownquilts.com/" target="_blank">quiltnado </a></span></span></h2>
</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<h3>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">"Quiltnado"</span></h3>
noun \'kwilt -'n ā - dō\<br />
<br />
definition:<br />
A very intense squall consisting of fabric, thread and sewing tools.<br />
Known to strike suddenly, very often coming on the heels of a quilt related activity such as<br />
a guild meeting, fabric shopping, or blog hopping.<br />
<br />
example:<br />
"I was going to do some laundry, but before I knew it, a very intense quiltnado hit."<br />
<br />
Intensity ranges:<br />
<b>category 1</b> - Mild, generally only lasts 1 hour or less and leaves behind a very small debris field.<br />
<b>category 2</b> - Moderate, can last anywhere from 1 to 4 hours and usually involves a combination of newly purchased and stash fabric. A moderate debris field that includes many fabric and pins.<br />
<b>category 3</b> - Severe, a quiltnado in this category can easily last a day or longer. The debris field is very widespread and may include candy wrappers, coffee cups, ignored family members, backed up text messages, massive amounts of fabric, pins, empty spools and pizza boxes. <br />
<br />
origin:<br />
<a href="http://www.thistledownblog.blogspot.com/">www.thistledownblog.blogspot.com</a><br />
<a href="http://www.thistledownquilts.com/" target="_blank">www.thistledownquilts.com </a> <br />
<br />
<br />
There is not much you can do to ward off a large quiltnado. The best course of action is to make sure you have plenty of supplies on hand, (including chocolate) then hunker down behind your sewing machine and ride it out. WOO HOO! <br />
<br />
When was the last time you've been hit by a quiltnado? What category was it ? <br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Surely, I am not the only one that has had this wardrobe tragedy befall them.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Have you noticed small holes that mysteriously appear on the front of your knit shirts? Especially t'shirts or tops that tend to be more closely fitted? </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">At first I figured it was the quality of the fabrics in the shirts I was buying, and to some degree that is true. But still....why are all these little holes appearing toward the bottom of my knit tops and t-shirts?</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><i>See here.....</i></span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vIb4D6TpCjw/UZL9IXWgUVI/AAAAAAAABko/D-R6AYjT75g/s1600/tshirtred.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="321" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vIb4D6TpCjw/UZL9IXWgUVI/AAAAAAAABko/D-R6AYjT75g/s400/tshirtred.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><i> and here....</i></span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-W65F-KP4mRo/UZL8uTWalaI/AAAAAAAABkg/Spv2fuzUqvQ/s1600/tshirtpurple+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="273" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-W65F-KP4mRo/UZL8uTWalaI/AAAAAAAABkg/Spv2fuzUqvQ/s400/tshirtpurple+copy.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">How annoying!</span><br />
I finally figured it out, maybe you have already and I've just been slow on the uptake.<br />
<br />
<br />
In a perfect world, this is what the waistline of jeans and shorts should look like......<br />
nice and smooth and flat.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9M1WTt9gNes/UZL9hZONlXI/AAAAAAAABk4/5RQUeuoG89w/s1600/shorts2+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9M1WTt9gNes/UZL9hZONlXI/AAAAAAAABk4/5RQUeuoG89w/s400/shorts2+copy.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
But most of mine, and most likely yours too, look like this next picture. The top corner by the button- hole curls over and sticks out.<i> <b>That's when I finally said A-HA</b>,</i> there's the culprit that is ruining all my shirts prematurely. <i><b>The stiff, curly corner on my jeans and shorts are wearing little holes in the shirts!</b></i><br />
<br />
Grated if I spent more than $20.00 on a t-shirt it would take a lot longer to happen but eventually those tiny holes would appear I'm sure. <br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-W6pc0tED1C0/UZL9VuwMO7I/AAAAAAAABkw/hMpsg3Fgv5w/s1600/shorts1+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Linda has found the culprit of the holes in her shirts. blog from Thistledown & Co" border="0" height="300" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-W6pc0tED1C0/UZL9VuwMO7I/AAAAAAAABkw/hMpsg3Fgv5w/s400/shorts1+copy.jpg" title="Thistledown blog on fixing the cause of holes in knit shirts." width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
so here's what I did.... I took my rotary cutter (you could use a scissors) and lopped off that<i><b> stupid little corner.</b></i> It won't hurt the buttonhole. I hardly ever tuck anything in, and if I did a belt would cover it. So why not just cut it off? So I did.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uAi4DV_Bl_0/UZL-aWqIdrI/AAAAAAAABlE/zR1LgaaDLoo/s1600/shortscut+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="the way to keep your pants and shorts from waering holes in your shirts" border="0" height="295" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uAi4DV_Bl_0/UZL-aWqIdrI/AAAAAAAABlE/zR1LgaaDLoo/s400/shortscut+copy.jpg" title="thistledown quilts blog post about fixing that cause of holes in t-shirts and knits" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Then I set my machine to a dense zig-zag stitch about .5 length and 3.0 width. and stitched along the raw edge to finish it. One down and many more to go.<br />
Hopefully this solution will be helpful to you and your wardrobe of tops and t's.<br />
<br />
Save yours now, before it's too late.<br />

So every cloud has a silver lining, blah ,blah, blah, I just can't help it. I am thankful for any silver lining I can find.<br />
<br />
Well, Tuesday morning on my way to work my back tire went flat, flat, flat. By the time I was able to pull over safely , it was coming off the rim. Not a good thing...<br />
<b><i>Thankfully</i></b>, I hadn't forgotten my phone, and I put in a rescue call to my dh. He headed my way and came to the rescue. I stood and watched as he effortlessly proceeded to jack up the car and put on the spare. <b><i>Thankfully</i></b>, it hadn't started raining yet. After getting the ruined tire off the car he found a big honking screw in the tire. Who knows where we picked that up. <b><i>Thankfully</i></b>, I wasn't on a super busy road or the highway when it happened. He got me back on the road with a kiss and a wave. <b><i>Thankfully</i></b>, I have a sweet super hero husband. By the end of the day I had a new set of tires on the car. <b><i>Thankfully</i></b>, they were on sale.<br />
<b><i><br /></i></b>
Wishing you some silver linings in your day....sometimes you just have to look a little harder than others.<br />
<br />
Yes, I know it's Friday. Apparently blogger doesn't work as seamlessly on my ipad, as it does on my desktop. Happy Friday to all.........<br />

We just recently said goodbye to huge flocks of Robins that migrate through south Florida. We would awake to hundreds of Robins in our yard for about 2 weeks. It was looking like Alfred Hitchcock's movie The Birds, but they have since moved on and are making their way north once again. <br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Spring also means bunnies, right?<br />
These little cuties were at our local County Fair this weekend, there were 8 babies in all and if you look to the left the runt of the liter is snugged up behind it's siblings. <br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
Some of the other signs of Spring in south Florida are the last of the quilt shows in Florida until Autumn approaches.<br />
<br />
I went to the Broward Quilt Expo this past weekend with dear friends Karen and Fran, along with a whole busload of quilt friends. WOO -HOO road trip!<br />

We had a great time of course and we were all re-inspired by the fabulous quilts on display.<br />
There was a nice mix of traditional and non-traditional quilts and a nice selection of vendors including my friend Mary with<a href="http://www.giftsforquilters.com/" target="_blank"> Giftsforquilters.com</a><br />
<br />
The best of show was a stunning non-traditional quilt by Helia Ricci<br />

She made this for her hubby and named it..... Red, White and You. I love the quilt and the name she gave it.<br />
It's a pattern by <a href="http://www.minickandsimpson.com/catalog.php?category=14" target="_blank">Minick and Simpson - Chippewa nine patch. </a><br />
<br />
Karen added a piped binding that I really like. She was very brave to try piped binding for the first time on a quilt this size, of course she did it very well.<br />
<br />
I think her hubby was happy to finally get his quilt returned to him after it's public showing. <br />
<br />
Congrats Karen, on another beautiful quilt finished!<br />
<br />
This week we are took a free motion class with <a href="http://www.bettynew.com/" target="_blank">Betty New.</a> We are super fortunate that she lives here in our city, though she does travel to teach as well. She is an amazing award winning quilter and an awesome teacher as well. She really shares her knowledge in her classes and does make her students feel inadequate. She is very encouraging and kind. I took a class from her last year and was very happy to be able to attend this one Will show you what I accomplish...<br />

<br />
Don't know about you, but I love Daylight Saving time. Probably because I am not really a morning person and so I don't mind if it's dark when I wake up.<br />
I think the weather also plays a part. This time of year in Florida, the weather is so beautiful in the evenings that having it stay light, longer, will be really nice.<br />
The drawback to that is dinner gets later and later too.<br />
We find ourselves puttering in the yard (or he in the yard and me in the studio) and before I know it, it's 7:30 or 8:00 and then I'm scrambling to get dinner on the table. Oh well, after a few weeks of disorder things get back into rhythm.<br />
<br />
We recently had family come to see us, my sister-in-law and her hubby were here for a visit and we headed to Manatee Park in Ft Myers.<br />
It was a very chilly day ( no really) and lo and behold there were lots of manatees at the park. The manatees frequent the area because it is the waterway that the power plant discharges warm water into. The manatees gather there for warmth when the other waterways get too chilly for them.<br />
<br />
Just think, sailors long ago mistook these as mermaids. Just goes to show you how society's perception of body image has changed over the centuries....and I guess they didn't mind bald mermaids at that. Must have been out at sea a very long time.<br />
<br />
Enjoy the extra daylight.....<br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Surely you know what I mean. I know you do.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Unfortunately, there are times that truly horrible things and real disasters do show up on our doorstep, we've all been there, but for this discussion, I'm referring to the mundane, everyday annoyances that can sap our peace of mind - if we let it.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The day the refrigerator dies, your car gets a flat tire, you lose your phone, the electric bill is higher than usual, someone close to you is being snarky, you have 3 places to be at once, your <span style="font-size: large;">printer is out of ink</span>, you need a root canal..... all stressful, all very upsetting, and a downright drain to our peace of mind.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">To ward off the dread, chase away the gloom, and to put an end to the pity party, I try to remind myself that as bad, as a bad day may have seemed, there are millions of people that had a day much, much worse than mine. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I admit, <span style="font-size: large;">t</span>his <span style="font-size: large;">P</span>ollyanna attitude isn't always easy, it can take a lot of practice to perfect<span style="font-size: large;">.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Without a doubt, I am ever thankful for the <span style="font-size: large;">really important, life encompassing</span> things, like family, friends, faith, health, food, shelter, freedom, <span style="font-size: large;">etc.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: large;"> </span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I also choose to find something small and simple everyday to be thankful for and that can put a whole different perspective on my day. <span style="font-size: large;">T</span>hat's what "Simply Thankful Thursday's" is all about. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #e06666;"><span style="font-size: large;"><i>Today's Simply Thankful is ......</i></span></span><br />
<span style="color: #e06666;"><span style="font-size: large;"><i><b><span style="font-size: large;">T</span>ime</b>, today I got to spend some quality time in my studi<span style="font-size: large;">o - without any laundry waiting for me.... of c<span style="font-size: large;">ou<span style="font-size: large;">rse there was some dust trying to get my attention, <span style="font-size: large;"> </span>but I chose to i<span style="font-size: large;">gnore it. <span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: large;"> </span></span></span></span></span></span></i></span></span><br />
